This fishery is rapidly making a name for itself, here in the South East for its excellent carp and match fishing. This is thanks mainly to the efforts of owner Robert Harman. There are 5 lakes in the site, with a total of over 120 pegs. I'm sure that Robert wouldn't disagree when we say that the car parking area is a bit of a tip, but don't let that put you off, the lakes are very well landscaped, and apart from the jets landing and taking off from Gatwick a few miles away, it's very peaceful, picturesque fishing.
It's mostly carp fishing, not huge fish but fast growing, hard fighting mirrors of between 3 and 7 lbs, that will certainly test your fishing tackle to the limits, on the main Plantation Lake, and mixed stocks with some bizarre species including sturgeon in some if the other lakes. See the favourite pegs page for a run down on each lake, with species, favoured areas etc.
Robert is paranoid about the health of his fish. His is the only fishery that I know where they supply all of the keepnets and landing nets on competitions. He has banned match anglers from the fishery for rolling fish down down a keep net at the weigh in. Having said all of that, Stubpond fish are in really excellent condition, I've never seen a mark on one, and their fight is second to none.
Of interest to the match fisherman is the fact that Stubpond is one of the three fisheries involved in the 'Polemania 2000' series of matches, culminating in a big money final where the winner is expected to pick up £5,000. Last year the series was run only on Stubpond, and the winner Steve Sanders, the Dorking skipper, picked up a cool £2,000. The series this year is much bigger, and will certainly attract many of the local 'aces'.
